  • Vintage Hand Carved Shamanic Nepali Horse Mask Hand Painted dating from 1970's
Vintage Hand Carved Shamanic Nepali Horse Mask Hand Painted dating from 1970's Vintage Hand Carved Shamanic Nepali Horse Mask Hand Painted dating from 1970's

Bought from an Artisan Street Market in the Heart of Kathmandu

We believe that this charming authentic vintage Shamanic Nepalese Horse mask was hand carved and hand painted sometime in the mid 1970's in Kathmandu, by Tibetan craftsmen who had escaped from Tibet after the Chinese invasion.  It's heritage has been validated by the Nepali Antiquities department.  This means that it has been exported legally from Nepal, there is the remains of their wax seal on the inside of the mask.

Carved wooden horse masks are a significant part of Himalayan and South Asian artistic and ritual traditions. In many cultures, the horse symbolizes strength, speed, and freedom, and these masks are often used in ceremonial dances, storytelling, and religious rituals. Crafted from durable wood and adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant colors, horse masks are believed to invoke protection, power, and spiritual guidance. In Nepalese culture, they are associated with deities and mythological tales, representing vitality and courage. These masks also showcase the region’s rich craftsmanship and serve as cultural artifacts connecting communities to their spiritual and artistic heritage.

In ceremonies, these masks are believed to ward off evil spirits, ensure safety, and foster harmony within the community. Crafted from wood and adorned with vibrant colors, they reflect Tibet's rich artistic heritage. These masks embody a blend of shamanic practices, animistic beliefs, and Tibetan craftsmanship, preserving ancient spiritual traditions.

The tradition of crafting such masks dates back centuries and is tied to Nepal’s vibrant Newar culture, known for its exceptional wood carving skills. These masks were traditionally used in rituals, festivals, and dances, such as those performed during the Indra Jatra festival, where deities are invoked to bless and protect communities.

These masks are not just decorative; they hold deep spiritual significance, serving as protectors in homes and symbols of devotion. Vintage Nepali masks reflect Nepal’s artistic heritage, blending sacred symbolism with intricate craftsmanship, and are cherished as cultural and spiritual treasures.

Our Shamanic Nepali Horse masks measures 25 cm by 14 cm and is approximately 8 cm deep.  We have a pair of horse that we have named Chandra ( moon) & Diya ( light) and they wear their 50 years of history proudly, they have developed a unique character, they are a bit worn and  the paint is a little chipped but they are the real deal, they were made for a Tibetan family to ward off evil spirits, not as a souvenir for tourists!

You can buy the masks separately or better still buy them as a pair ( it would be sad to split them up)
