Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea), known in Thai as "dok anchan", has long roots in Southeast Asian herbal traditions. While it is best known for its vivid indigo-blue dye, the plant has also been used in incense blends derived from dried petals and other aromatic botanicals. Historically, such incense was less about fragrance alone and more about ritual purpose—used in offerings, meditation, and traditional healing practices. In Thailand, butterfly pea is associated with clarity, calm, and spiritual balance, making it a fitting component in temple rituals and household altars.

Its use in incense reflects broader Thai cultural values that blend Buddhism, animist beliefs, and herbal knowledge. The smoke is thought to purify spaces and focus the mind during prayer or reflection. Though not as common as sandalwood or jasmine incense, butterfly pea holds a quieter, symbolic place—valued for its natural origin, gentle aroma, and connection to mindfulness and inner harmony.

Our Butterfly Pea Incense is hand rolled by our lovely small scale fair trade producers in Thailand. They have a large garden where they grow their own flowers which they harvest and dry in the sun before rolling them into a fine powder. They then get a fine stick of bamboo which they roll in a little natural gum to make it sticky then roll it in the Butterly Pea powder.

Because our incense is entirely natural you get a beautiful scent unlike many of the commercial incenses which merely spray their incense sticks with perfume which smells great in the packet but not so good when it burns!

Our Butterly Pea incense comes in a pack containing  8 high quality incense sticks, each stick measures 6 inches / 15 cm and will burn for 15 - 20 mins in a still room.
